Why does the first conversion take a moment? +
The AVIF encoder is about 1 to 2 MB of WebAssembly and downloads the first time you use it. After that it's cached, so conversions are quick.
Will AVIF be smaller than my JPG? +
Usually yes. AVIF often beats JPG by 30 to 50% at matched quality. Re-encoding a JPG won't recover lost detail, but it will shrink the file.
